There are so many outstanding places to visit and things to do in the UK!

In London, there is amazing shopping – try Regent Street for formal clothes or Covent Garden for the latest urban street gear. Or check out Boxpark Shoreditch, a pop-up mall made from used shipping containers, for a great mix of music, cafes and fashion and lifestyle brands.

There are wonderful galleries such as the National Portrait Gallery or the Tate Gallery, or you can keep the kids happy with a visit to Legoland Windsor.

Celebrate the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge, or go ghost-spotting on a twilight tour through the Tower of London. Feast your senses at the Edinburgh Festival or join an austere retreat at an ancient monastery.

Take a beautiful drive through Irish coastal towns where you can try brewed stout and blarney with the locals. Hike through the Yorkshire dales, or surf the Cornish coast.

Risks of travelling to the UK

Crime and unrest

Smartraveller recommends that you be aware of the risk of terrorist attack throughout the UK. The London bombings in 2005 were an example of an unexpected large-scale attack, and could occur again.

There is petty crime throughout the UK. Luggage, wallet, handbag and passport theft can occur here at any time, particularly in crowded places such as tube stations

Unexpected delays to your flights or tours due to weather events are quite common in the winter months. Plus the ever-present traffic jams around London mean you run the risk of missing your flight at any time.

Although the UK has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, many things are not covered – dental costs, for instance, and many common medications. You may face long waiting lists for treatment, and you will not necessarily be able to choose your doctor. Also, doctors in the UK do not have to accept you as an NHS patient, and can request a private fee when a rebate is not available.

So travel insurance for cancellations and delays and medical care and assistance is worth considering, even in the UK.

Rental car excess

Roads are crowded and busy, and many villages have tiny lanes and winding streets. If you’re planning to hire a car or campervan, it’s a good idea to check the excess you would have to pay for any damage to the hire car or campervan, even if it’s not your fault. Travel insurance can cover this excess, which can sometimes be up to AUD $5,000.

The cost of skipping travel insurance

In 2014, Worldcare helped 50 Australians who travelled to the UK, ran into trouble and made a claim on their travel insurance policy.

Most of our total claims cost for the UK that year was for cancellation fees and lost deposits (38%) and medical and hospital expenses (30%). Other common claims were for rental vehicle excess (11%) and luggage and personal effects (10%).

Covering any cancellation fees and lost deposits could leave you AUD $9,385 out of pocket on average!

If you are injured or get sick while travelling in the UK, you can expect to be out of pocket an average of AUD $1,883 without travel insurance.

Running into rental car trouble in the UK could cost an average of AUD $1,081 without insurance.

If your luggage or personal effects are lost, stolen or delayed in the UK, it could cost you an average of AUD $444 without insurance.

So it’s worth considering travel insurance, which is not expensive and may save you considerable cost and trouble.

Worldcare has a range of travel insurance options and inclusions to suit any UK holiday budget – even if yours is limited.

Before you travel to the UK

Worldcare Australia - london-pub

As soon as adverse events such as bad weather, natural disasters and others that may affect your trip hit mass media, you are not covered unless you already have travel insurance, as it’s no longer ‘unforeseen’.

It’s wise to buy your insurance in advance of travelling, as you never know when disaster can strike and cause you to cancel or delay your trip. If you have your policy arranged well in advance of travelling, you are protected. So take it out before you leave and you should be eligible to claim.
