ANZAC Day

Posted on April 02, 2014

ANZAC Day is one of the most important national holidays on the Australian calendar. The day – April 25 – marks the anniversary of the first major military action in the First World War, as fought by the Australian and New Zealand armed forces who landed in Gallipoli on this day, 99 years ago. Ever since this important moment in time, Australians and New Zealanders have travelled back to where the troops fought in Gallipoli to honour their memories. The following infographic explains some of the other facts and figures that contributed to this period.

For those travelling to Turkey for Anzac Day, expect to meet a lot of fellow Australians along the way. With 2015 marking a century since the troops hit Gallipoli soil, numbers will be limited and those wanting to go had to sign up for a ballot to get a spot in the official Dawn Service and Lone Pine/Chunuk Bair Service on April 25 next year.

While applications closed in January, if you missed out, don’t worry! You can still go on an ANZAC tour from a local company in Gallipoli or, alternatively, visit when the crowds have thinned out, such as the autumn season in September and October.
