Guide to the Best Food Festivals in the British Isles
The European summer season is a popular time for visitors from across the world. With mild weather and beautiful scenery, the period between May and July offers lots for tourists to enjoy, including dozens of annual food festivals across the nation.
Festival of Food, Fish and Fun
The Irish town of Dunmore is host to the Festival of Food, Fish and Fun, a summer event held in June that celebrates local cuisine and traditions. The festival features a number of restaurants, a farmers' market, live music, activities for children and adults in the local park, as well as harbour-based activities, such as fishing and sailing.
The popular town of Bristol is home to the annual Vegfest, a unique event held in May that combines delicious vegan fare against the backdrop of a fun festival vibe. Known for being the biggest veggie event in the world, the three-day show features over 120 market stalls, music acts throughout the day, cooking demos, nutrition and health talks, a licensed bar and even a cinema!
Burnham-on-Sea Food and Drink Festival
Also in May, the Burnham-on-Sea Food and Drink Festival is a free festival featuring a number of events, including a bake-off and brew-off and even a chilli cook-off! The event attracts some of the best in the business, with guests given the opportunity to try out food and drinks from stallholders as well as watch cooking demonstrations and the various competitions held throughout the day.
London Coffee Festival
For lovers of coffee, the London Coffee Festival delivers the very best in brewed beans. Featuring over 250 artisan coffee and gourmet food stalls, tastings and demonstrations from some of the very best, as well as street food, live music and art exhibitions, this festival will leave you buzzing! Head to London in April for the festival which celebrates the region’s bustling and vibrant coffee scene.
The Colchester Food and Drink Festival
Towards the end of June, Colchester’s famous Castle Park comes alive with the Colchester Food and Drink Festival. Offering free celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, a number of food and drink stalls, free live music and one of the biggest circus tops in Europe – the Big Top, the festival will keep you busy all weekend and costs less than 5 pounds to get in!
Artisan Cheese Fair
For cheese fans, this festival in England’s Melton Mowbray is the place to be. Held in May, the festival is your opportunity to taste around 200 different cheeses all in one place. Showcasing 50 different cheese makers from across the British Isles, the Artisan Cheese Fair is not only a place to nibble on cheese, but also includes tutorials from industry experts and stalls offering other local produce.
