Travelling to the US? Don’t forget your travel insurance

The United States of America is a favourite travel destination for holidaymakers the world over. Whether it is the vast wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, the iconic bright skylines of New York or Las Vegas or perhaps the theme parks of Florida or the beaches of California, the US really does have it all.

The US is also particularly popular with Australians. Everybody knows we like to travel to many countries all around the world and the US is no different. With the same language, easy and plentiful air links to Australia and even a similar culture in some areas of the country, the US makes a perfect travel destination.

If you have decided that a trip to the US is for you then, like any holiday, you need to make sure that adequate preparations are made. For instance, what you need to pack will depend on the area of the country to which you are travelling, what you intend to do whilst there and what time of year it is.

Look for specific advice from relevant and experienced people as to what you should bring. If you are going ice-fishing in Alaska in November then obviously don’t rely on equipment you used camping in California the previous summer!

Also make sure you check on the current weather conditions for all of the locations you intend to visit on your trip, don’t rely on what the conditions are likely to be at this time of year, use the Internet and get up-to-date information.

It is also advisable to arrange currency before you go. Shop around to get the best deal dependent on current foreign exchange currency rates and get the most from the amount you wish to spend. This may also help you budget for the holiday as it can be tempting to convert or withdraw far more money whilst you are abroad.

Other pre-departure tips are to give someone (who isn’t accompanying you) an itinerary and contact list for your holiday, should anybody back at home need to get in touch in case of an emergency. Also ensure you have fully considered any visa conditions for entry into the US. See the Australian Government websites or speak to your travel agent about these matters.

So if you have remembered to pack everything you need for the trip, acquired the necessary US dollars and sorted out your entry visa if required; is there anything else? Oh yes - don’t forget travel insurance!

Effective travel insurance can help protect you in case anything goes wrong. Ensure you purchase insurance from a well-established professional company with experience in insuring travellers to the US and you can be safe in the knowledge that you have cover for your trip.

Check the circumstances and activities covered by your policy before you purchase to ensure that your specific trip’s details are included and you are ready. Enjoy your trip safely and securely, but don’t forget to have fun!
