Backpacking tips for New Zealand

New Zealand is a well known backpacker’s destination, with spectacular views, outdoor activities and cheap accommodation. Our travellers tips will give you some great ideas for your next trip.

Getting there and getting around

Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas, Pacific Blue and Emirates are the major airlines flying between Australia and New Zealand.

Buses and taxis run in every major town in New Zealand.

You can also hire a car or campervan to get around, and you don't have to have car insurance, even if you hire a car. However, if you do have an accident you'll probably be liable for any damage. So for a few extra $, it is worth getting Travel Insurance just to protect your assets & to play on the side of Karma!

Accommodation Hostel Bookers and YMCA both have good backpackers accommodation throughout New Zealand. You can also check out Wotif or Last-Minute.com for some cheap hotel deals.

For something different, check out the Sudima Hotel right near Christchurch airport. It's where all the people leaving for Antarctic stay, with photos on the walls of the teams.

Weather

New Zealand has a temperate climate, with the South Island being colder and wetter than the North.

If you’re interested in a beach holiday, the warmer months over the Christmas period are the best times to visit. If you’re more interested in skiing, visit during July and August. You can check the weather for when you’re planning to go here.

Rainfall can be year-round, so locals recommend you bring a warm coat or rain jacket at all times.

Currency

The currency of New Zealand is the NZ dollar. You can check the exchange rate here.

Things to do and see

Skiing

New Zealand in the winter is well known for its spectacular ski runs. Travellers who are used to European pistes may find that the ski towns are less developed and wilder than those in Europe.

In particular, experienced travelers recommend you don't try to drive a campervan up the Remarkables in winter. You will not make it up the slope in the snow and doing a 3-point turn to get back down endangers everyone on the road. And if you hate heights & are in Queenstown,  stick with Coronet - at least the road is sealed so the trip up is slightly less frightening!

Hiking

New Zealand is well known for its spectacular hikes through mountain scenery unlike anywhere else in the world. For information on hikes, visit Ultimate Hikes

Bungee Jumping

The original Bungee Jump was first performed at the Kawerau Suspension Bridge in Bungee; Queenstown, New Zealand. There are many places to try this out – you can even heli-bungee! However, it’s good to know that bungee jumping is an activity that is not covered by your Travel Insurance.
